There are weddings where everything feels effortless. Where the joy is so genuine and so contagious that by the end of the day you have forgotten you were working at all.
Rachel and Josh's wedding at Castlemartyr Resort was one of those days.
Before the ceremony, while Rachel was getting ready with her bridesmaids, Josh and his father and groomsmen had a moment of their own. A toast with Redbreast whiskey. No fuss, no formality. Just a group of people who love each other, marking the moment in exactly the right way. I photographed it quietly and it is one of my favourite images from the day. The kind of moment that only happens once and disappears if nobody is paying attention.
The ceremony was held indoors at Castlemartyr, in one of the most beautifully dressed ceremony spaces I have photographed in East Cork. There is something about Castlemartyr indoors — the light comes through at exactly the right angle in the afternoon and the room holds an extraordinary warmth that makes every photograph feel considered even when nothing is staged.
After the ceremony the drinks reception moved to the formal gardens. Castlemartyr's walled garden is one of the finest backdrops in Cork. The geometry of it, the colour, the way it frames a group of people without any effort, it does most of the work for you. Rachel and Josh's guests spilled out into the afternoon sun and the whole thing had that rare quality that only the best wedding days have. It felt like a party that everyone had been looking forward to for months.
The grounds at Castlemartyr are extraordinary for a creative shoot. Seventeen acres of parkland, the ruins of a twelfth century castle on the estate, the walled garden, the avenue of trees. I have photographed here many times and I still find new frames every time. With Rachel and Josh it was completely unhurried, they were relaxed, laughing, completely themselves, and the photographs from those two hours across the grounds are among my best work from Castlemartyr.
It was a fun, warm, generous day. Exactly the kind of wedding I love being part of.
