Some weddings stay with you.
Not because of the venue, though Barnabrow House is one of the most beautiful places I have ever photographed. Not because of the weather, though the sun showed up and refused to leave. But because of the feeling of the day. The sheer, uncomplicated, contagious joy of it.
Leanne and Phil got married at Barnabrow House in East Cork on a day that felt like it had been personally ordered from somewhere warm and generous. The kind of day where everything goes right and everyone feels it.
Phil is the son of a Samoan chief. He wore an 'ula for the ceremony, the traditional Samoan ceremonial garland that has been worn by chiefly family members at significant occasions for generations. It represents love, unity and status, and it was one of the most striking and meaningful things I have ever seen a groom wear on a wedding day. In a sea of morning suits and traditional Irish wedding wear, Phil's 'ula was a quiet statement about who he is and where he comes from. I was honoured to photograph it.
Leanne walked up the aisle accompanied by both of her parents, one on each side, and the three of them walked together to meet Phil at the altar. It was one of those moments that nobody can plan or choreograph. It just is what it is. And it was beautiful.
The ceremony was outdoors. The white chairs had bunches of flowers tied at the end of each pew. When it was over the air was full of flower petal confetti and the kind of noise that only comes from a room full of people who are completely, genuinely happy.
And then there were the dogs.
A dachshund and two French bulldogs. If I am being honest, they stole the show. Not in an annoying way. In the way that animals sometimes do at weddings, where they appear at exactly the right moment and remind everyone that this is a day about love in its simplest form. Watching three dogs navigate a wedding at Barnabrow House was one of the most entertaining things I have photographed in 17 years.
Barnabrow House is an extraordinary place to photograph. The steps at the back of the house give you a natural, elegant frame. The front door frames a couple perfectly with the light behind them. I photographed Leanne and Phil through that doorway with all three dogs around them and the result is one of my favourite images from that entire year. The driveway in afternoon sunshine is something else entirely, long, tree-lined and bathed in golden light that does most of the work for you.
The grounds are simply beautiful. Relaxed. Green. Full of corners and textures and light that makes every photograph feel unhurried and natural.
And then it became a party. A proper one.
Phil is my friend. I have known him long enough to know exactly what kind of wedding this was going to be. And it was every bit as joyful, warm and completely alive as I expected.
To Leanne and Phil, thank you for one of the best days I have spent behind a camera. And thank you for bringing the dogs.
